Over the last few weeks in PsHEE, students in year 11, were visited by a remarkable guest speaker from the NGO InBaze, which focuses on the successful integration of immigrants into the Czech Republic. Perla, who is an immigrant and person of color with a background in artistry and theatre, shared compelling insights into her life in Iran, her journey to Czechia, and the challenges she’s faced while pursuing her dreams.
The talk covered important topics like cultural identity, prejudice, and resilience. Students were deeply impacted by her honesty and courage:
Learning and Awareness: Many students expressed that they were shocked to learn about the extent of discrimination happening in Czechia, even in public spaces like hospitals. One student noted, “I learned about the discrimination happening in my country. This surprised me and made me interested in why this happens.”
Empathy and Resilience: Perla’s ability to overcome adversity resonated strongly. Students highlighted her resilience and determination to stay and work in the Czech Republic despite experiencing prejudice. A common takeaway was the importance of not judging others, as one student succinctly put it: “Don’t judge a book by its cover. Take a second to analyse character from within.”
Global Perspectives: The session also offered an eye-opening view into life in Iran, including the reality of the government and the struggles of its citizens. Students learned “to not enact prejudice against the citizens, due to the actions of their country,” and expressed a desire to learn more about Iranian culture, traditions, and holidays.
Perla Moravid’s presentation was an invaluable lesson in empathy, cultural understanding, and personal strength. It provided our students with a window into what it would be like to live life from a different viewpoint and perspective.
