Last term, the children in Tiny Tots and Pre Nursery classes have been exploring the magic of winter through a variety of indoor and outdoor experiences. We have enjoyed frosty mornings, icy days, and even falls of real snow, all of which have inspired our recent activities. Inside the classroom, we recreated a winter landscape by making artificial snow. This was a significant sensory experience for the children as they felt the cold, powdery texture on their skin and watched how it changed when manipulated. Engaging with such materials is vital for developing fine motor skills, as the children practice pinching, scooping, and squeezing. These activities also provide a wonderful opportunity to build vocabulary; as the children played, we introduced descriptive words such as chilled, soft, crunchy, and fluffy to help them articulate their sensory discoveries.

The children also enjoyed playing with Arctic animals and creating their own artificial snowmen. When we were fortunate enough to have real snow outside, the children explored its unique texture, went sledging, threw snowballs, and built snowmen together. For some, this was their very first encounter with snow, and it was a joy to witness them delighting in its magic.

One of our most successful art sessions involved the children using ice cubes to paint directly onto card.

As they moved the melting ice, it created a beautiful and unique picture, allowing them to observe the transition from solid to liquid while exploring colour and movement. The highlight of this winter theme was undoubtedly our winter show. Our little snowflakes and snowmen performed two themed songs with great confidence in front of an audience for the very first time, marking a wonderful conclusion to our seasonal explorations.
