Claire Svoboda

Year 4M Teaching Partner

Originally from New Jersey, USA, I graduated with a degree in English Literature from Loyola University Maryland. I had three minors in Writing, Forensic Science, and Film Studies. In my final year, I was the only member of my school’s English department to complete a thesis, which focused on themes of justice in the Agatha Christie novel Murder on the Orient Express and four of its film adaptations. I loved school and have always known that I wanted to pursue a career in education. Once I graduated, I took an intensive month-long TEFL certification course with the intention of working in a school with children. I find working with children very fulfilling and spent three years as a counselor at a sleep-away summer camp and one year as a nanny/tutor.

Although my family has lived in the US for at least four generations, I experienced Czech culture as a child through several Czech au pairs, all of whom I am still in touch with. They are a large part of what inspired me to move here to Prague. I am really enjoying learning more about Czech culture and getting to connect with them and my family history on a deeper level.

In my free time I enjoy playing Ultimate Frisbee, hiking, skiing, and reading. I also love to travel and am excited to visit more of the Czech Republic and its surrounding countries.
