The Norbertov School Hall welcomed parents on Thursday, 12th March, for an engaging and insightful workshop titled “Big Feelings, Little Bodies: Helping Children with Emotional Regulation.” Led by Dr. Charlotte Longley, the session focused on practical ways to support children in understanding and managing their emotions.
Throughout the session, Dr. Longley explored the concept of emotional regulation and dysregulation, explaining how children’s developing brains influence their ability to cope with “big feelings.” She highlighted key aspects of neurodevelopment, helping parents better understand why emotional outbursts occur and how they can respond effectively.
The workshop offered a range of hands-on strategies, including building children’s emotional vocabulary, teaching simple regulation techniques such as breathing exercises, and encouraging positive reframing. A particularly popular topic was the “zones of regulation,” a color-coded framework that helps children recognize and communicate their emotional states, along with associated body signals. Parents also received practical tips for creating a calm and supportive home environment, reinforcing the importance of consistency and empathy in everyday interactions.
